ESL announced officially the biggest tournament in the history of Warcraft III – ESL Pro Tour 2020, with a total prize pool of $200,000!
The tournament is organized by ESL and DreamHack, and sponsored directly by Activision Blizzard. The whole league will include more than 40 weekly cups, 4 LAN “Challenger” events, and 1 Global Finals event.
Each of the Challenger events will feature a prize pool of $25,000, and 16 qualified players. For now the places and dates of 3 of these events have been announced:
- 21 February – Anahein (USA)
- 22 May – Jönköping (Sweden)
- XX August – [Unannounced Location Event]
- 16 October – Rotterdam (The Netherlands)
The final tournament will be held at the end of the year. There $100,000 in prizes will be distributed among 16 participants. These 16 participants will include the 4 Challenger event champions, and the 12 players with the highest amount of points collected throughout the year. The ways in which points will be collected will (likely) include:
- ESL Weekly Cups – likely prize pool of 100 Euro each (unofficial information);
- Challenger tournament qualifiers;
- Challenger tournaments – 5,000 points will be distributed in each of these events.
No additional information was published regarding the exact way in which the points system would work, or regarding the schedule of the weekly cups and qualifiers. Additionally, there is no clarification yet on whether each of the events will be region-based, or if they would be open to participants from the entire world.
