Readmore’s Reforged Open Cup got canceled. According to a statement from a Readmore team member, the reason is the ongoing debacle with Reforged and the inability for the desired viewership and player base to be reached during the first two events.
The statement is at odds with the official numbers though. Viewership on Back2Warcraft has been increasing steadily over the past months, and 102 players took part in the second instalment of the Readmore events (90 during the first one). Having in mind that the events were taking place on Friday evening, the numbers are very high. The other weekly cup that is played on a weekday – GG!! Jeez Weekly (played on Wednesdays) had 74 participants last week. However, even this number is great if compared with the numbers recorded by the last major Western weekly tournament – Gera Cup.
The last few Gera Cups, which took place in early 2018, were barely able to surpass the 40-player mark. Even Gera Forever Cup, which was promoted vigorously as the last ever Gera Cup, with a prize pool of close to $700, saw only 75 participants – and that included Korean players who are unable to participate in Western cups currently due to ping issues.
Additionally, just a few days ago the greatest number of participants in a one-day event outside of China since the times of Zotac Cup was recorded. 164 players took part in the second ESL Open Cup (with a total of 189 signups). That number bettered the record set in January by Ryzing Star Cup #5 – 155 participants (out of 173 signups).
The hope is that once most of the problems related to Reforged get fixed, Readmore and other tournament sponsors will have their interest in the scene reignited.
