Q: Thanks to FoV for participating in this interview. First, lets have you say hello to everyone.
FoV: Hey everyone, I’m Zhao Daxi – a coach and a player where team Winners. I’m thrilled to be meeting everyone through this interview.
Q: After so many years, you are back on the Warcraft III stage…what is the reason you have come back to play Warcraft?
FoV: Actually, there really isn’t any special reason. After finishing my military service, I just really liked playing games with my friends… Of course, the main one was League Of Legends, but later I came back to Warcraft. When I first came back it was like the feeling of playing it again for the first time – so intimate and so fun. Its still the same feeling now.
“I’m currently running two self-owned branded restaurants”
Q: Besides playing Warcraft III, what other work are you doing? I have heard that you are now running a restaurant. Could you tell us a bit about that?
FoV: Yeah, I’m currently running two self-owned branded restaurants. We mainly serve fried chicken, pasta, and pizza. After coming back to Warcraft III, many friends and fans came by my restaurant and all said the food was really great and they all had a great time. This is really satisfying feeling.
Due to having to manage the restaurants, even though I want to spend more time practicing, this is a really hard thing to do.
Q: So now you are the coach for WNS, How do you normally coach them?
FoV: Currently, the ability of the WNS roster far exceeds my own, so I won’t directly coach them on how to play well. My purpose is mainly serve as a bridge between the players and the team and coordinating the needs between them. Though its good that the players get more support from the team, I don’t think that players should have to make one sided sacrifices – both sides both progressing and working together is the best way.
Our WNS is so strong! Sok, Chaemiko, Who are all amazing good players.
Q: Recently, a new professional league tournament started. WNS has also joined bring the total to 7 pro teams. Which team do you think is the strongest?
FoV: I don’t think there is a weak team among them – each and every team is very capable and has the opportunity to compete for the championship. However, I to make a somewhat selfish declaration: Our WNS is so strong! Sok, Chaemiko, Who are all amazing good players. On top of that, their ability to learn is also strong. They all have ample time to eventually demonstrate their strength.
Remark: This interview was before the shut down of mTw and BSG.
Q: In the past, you also won the ESWC Championship and the Blizzard Classic Runner-up, as well as the NGL team championship. When was the most impressive moment in your entire career?
FoV: I think the most impressive was when I got known winning ESWC2004 – that was the first time I went abroad. I was really lucky to get that championship in the end.
After my professional career, that left the deepest impression on me was my time in China. In China, I was able to join many tournaments such as CEG etc as well as a variety of different activities and just living the team life which were among the most extraordinary moments of my life.
Moon’s influence on the Korean War3 scene has been massive.
Q: When the audiences and fans mention your record, they will recall 2005 and 2006 when you consecutively eliminated Moon. What were the specific circumstances at the time and how do you now rate your old rival Moon?
FoV: The former Moon was a really strong player. For me, he was the player you most hoped you wouldn’t have to meet during a tournament- even though I beat him twice during WCG. Moon has beaten me many times on other occasions. Now, Moon is to me the pride of Korea and the center of the War3 scene . Without him, Warcraft III in Korea wouldn’t have lasted until now – his influence on the Korean War3 scene has been massive.
I am so grateful that Warcraft III has lasted so long in Korea and is loved by so many people. I hope that I can be like Moon and show my strong side – but, this is course, no simple matter.
Q: Many people think your “surrounds” are among the best. Can you share some secrets to surrounding?
FoV: Use Ghouls! Everyone else just uses Fiends so there isn’t a need to surround. If you use Ghouls, it’s not difficult to surround! Though, actually, I am not the best at surrounding. There are other players who are much better. T.T
Every player has a moment of glory.
Q: Many people do not like comparing themselves to others, but audiences tend to make these comparisons. For example, in China, many people think that Ted and 120 are the best UD in history, yet some people think that Happy is – but Happy thinks that you are the world’s best UD. In your opinion, who is the world’s best UD?
FoV: Everyone has had their own moment of greatness – 120 has had – Ted has had – Happy has had – I’ve once had had my own. When you win a championship, you are then the world’s best UD player until the next time when you are judged poorly.
I think this question “who is the best UD player in history” is one that I can’t answer because every one of these players has a moment of glory that I will forever remember. Nor will I let say Happy’s peaks topped mine or that 120’s peak topped TeD’s. I am sorry that I cannot give you a satisfactory answer.
Also, regarding happy saying that I am the greatest UD, I am very honored and grateful. Hope that you can convey my thanks to Happy.
I hope with the release of Reforged, more players will be following the Warcraft III scene and joining.
Q: There is a saying that the currently Warcraft III Scene in Korea is broken and that all Korean players joining tournaments are veterans – that the younger generation doesn’t have a top-notch player. WSC was your show and Check’s show. How do you think about this?
FoV: Warcraft does not have a new generation of players in Korea and this shows that there are not a lot of players playing the game. But on the other hand, this also shows the strength of the veterans in Korea when they are able to contend with the world’s best. I also do hope that new faces will be joining the scene but this has not been easy. I hope with the release of Reforged, more players will be following the Warcraft III scene and joining.
Q: What do you think of Warcraft III: Reforged? Do you think it will bring on a second spring for Warcraft III?
FoV: I think there is the possibility. Even if, it doesn’t bring on a second spring, I think that there will be more players and the situation will be better than it is now. Of course, if Reforged, is popular in China, Korea, and Europe, then there is a chance for a second spring.
Thank you for taking the time to read such a long interview.
Q: Thank you for doing this interview. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
FoV: Thank you for taking the time to read such a long interview. Although I have been gone for so many years, there are so many fans who still remember me. This really surprised me. In the best time of my life, I would like to thank you for your company. Chinese fans having a deep love for me will also be remembered. If you are traveling to South Korea, I welcome everyone to come to my restaurant eat fried chicken!
(Editor’s note: Fov opened restaurant in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea)
